An area of design demanding increasing attention is wallpaper and wall stickers. Although the term ‘feature wall’ may well bring up mental images of chimney breasts adorned with tacky wallpaper, everyone should be open minded. There has been an explosion of creative illustration and imagery being blown up and adding some serious, quirky style to interiors.
Mini Moderns is a London based brand set up in 2006 by designers Keith Stephenson and Mark Hampshire. Specializing in applied patterns, their products range from wallpapers to ceramics.
Their illustrations are inspired by everything from ‘mid-century textiles, vintage toys and literature’ – and it’s clear to see. The picture above is of their Backgammon design, inspired (as you might imagine), by the popular ’70s pastime. Obsessed with its ‘glamorous connotations’ and ‘graphic geometry’, the design is available in 4 colours as wallpaper. The Paisley Crescent design below was inspired by the characters and settings of Hanif Kureishi’s novel ‘The Buddha of Suburbia’. Though initially appearing much like typical paisley designs, look more closely and you’ll see rows of houses, racing bikes and trees depicting suburban life.
Another brand changing the face of wall-art is Surface View. Founded by Michael Ayerst, it ‘all began’ with his youthful obsession with stamp collecting, which developed into an obsession with imagery in general. The website features literally hundreds of images ranging from world famous collections to more obscure, hidden gems, each of which can be transferred into an artwork of your choice. Wall stickers, murals, ceramics, birchply boards, blinds and lampshades – the choice is astonishing and the opportunities for beautiful unique interiors seemingly boundless.
Brands like these are steering us happily away from identikit homes and interior products into products of real imagination. This is an exciting time.
