Design Boom have featured a desk made by Korean designer Lee Sanghyeok. The idea was to demonstrate how our tactile sense can cause use ‘to achieve intimate connections between furniture within our surroundings’.
Any time a drawer is closed, another opens. Literally – the idea being the compartments are in conversation with one another.
I can’t help but feel the novelty would wear pretty slim, pretty soon. It seems to imply a drawer always has to be open, and that you must play a sort of puzzle with it, and yourself, to get at your stuff. The designer thinks it ‘encourages the user to act with intention’, but I’m fairly sure that act of doing anything already implies intent. Do I want a mocking little desk-poltergeist sneeringly making me think about my desk usage? No.
Other than that – nice desk.
